Challenge:

Design a new 2-classroom addition for each existing school. The existing buildings are comprised of a concrete foundation with a concrete slab on grade and a steel structure with a metal deck and a rubber roof. The outside walls are brick veneer over concrete block and the interior partitions are painted concrete block.

Solution:

CBI designed the additions to be very straightforward and provide the same amount of square footage that existed in the existing adjacent classrooms, using the same construction materials and assemblies, including new egress doors to match the existing and a new storefront exit door assembly at the end of the extended corridor. Because the grading was higher at the additions, new stairs with railings were also designed. The interior finishes are gypsum wall board, with vinyl composition floor tile and a suspended acoustical tile ceiling. The classrooms were provided with new heating and air conditioning. In addition, the design allowed for the installation of white boards and cubbies for the students.
