Challenge:

Design a new retail store to be the first to open at the new North Terminal at Miami International Airport.

Solution:

CBI’s design team produced the Schematic Design, Design Development Drawings and Renderings to expeditiously gain approval from Miami-Dade Aviation Authority (MDAD). Following the design approval, CBI diligently completed the Construction Documents and expedited the plans through the permit process, substantially reducing the time required to commence construction. CBI also performed Construction Administration and Project Close-out duties. The design concept for the concession store was to create the “library-like” feel of an “old-world” bookstore using a modern design vocabulary, much in the same tradition as the other Books & Books stores. This was achieved by using a traditional dark colored wood grain with floor to ceiling shelves. More importantly, the layout for the store included the creation of “halls of books,” creating a space within a space, emphasizing the library concept. Storefront display was also maximized and was done in a way to offer a glimpse of the store within in order to make it an inviting space for the public.
