Challenge:

Upgrade the curtain wall to overcome severe deterioration of the wood paint coating which had become a drain on the University's budget.

Solution:

McKay Laboratories is a seven-story laboratory structure constructed in 1953. The exterior façade consists primarily of a wood curtain wall with operable windows. CBI evaluated the façade with the intent of upgrading the curtain wall. The curtain wall was determined to have about 60 mils of paint from numerous coatings, including lead-based paint. CBI evaluated several repair options, from removal and replacement to aluminum cladding and strapping and repainting. The university elected to strip and repaint the curtain wall with a high quality paint system.
