Challenge:

The two, ten story, elderly housing buildings were constructed in the 1970’s. Each building suffered from deterioration of the balcony structures at each unit. Also, the solid railing panels act as sails to hold the wind and exert extraordinary pressure on the assembly. Access was very difficult, as the contractor was not permitted to enter any of the building interior spaces. In addition, the existing exterior wall panels contain asbestos. Because of a restricted budget, the contractor could not disturb the panels in any way.

Solution:

CBI was responsible for the investigation of the existing conditions to determine causes, as well as to design the solutions. Balcony repairs included waterproofing, deck membrane, concrete and steel repairs, railing repair and design of railing infill replacement.
