Challenge:

Provide structural engineering services for the expansion and modernization of this Tewksbury Middle School to meet modern function needs, current seismic loads and an expanding student population.

Solution:

A structural inventory was conducted for the four buildings. Preliminary designs, used for budget purposes, directed the decision as to which structures to bring up to code standard and which were to be demolished. The original school complex was studied for reuse, reinforced for current code loads in the sections to be salvaged (the remainder were demolished), and added to with new construction. New structures utilized a potpourri of construction materials to maximize the efficiency of the construction process. Deep roof trusses and roof deck at the gymnasium were “tuned” to accommodate mechanical systems. The completed project contains classroom space, kitchen and cafeteria, sports facilities, and an administrative area.
